Day 15 (Oct 14) game Ukraine 3 Brazil 5

Falcao treble downs Ukraine

Brazil marched into the semi-finals having won all of their six games today, but their Ukrainian opponents bowed out with their heads held high following a 5-3 defeat by the formidable hosts.

Gennadiy Lisenchuk's side even silenced the Maracanazinho crowd with an early opener, Valeriy Zamyatin pouncing on a defensive error with just 64 seconds on the clock.

However, they found Falcao in irrepressible mood. By the interval, the No12 had scored three goals and created another for Lenisio to send Brazil in at a 4-1 lead.

Romanov scored Ukraine's second goal of the first half and, after Marquinho had improved A Seleção's advantage to three goals, his second of the game made the final score 5-3. Brazil may have won, but Ukraine can certainly be proud of their final performance of this year's competition.

Paulo de Oliveira, Brazil coach
Today we committed some individual errors which we paid for in goals. However, I'm not really concerned as it's only to be expected that we would relax a little having already qualified. Once our defence rediscovered its bite, we had no more problems. Now that we've made it as far as the semis, our goal is to go on and become champions.

Vladyslav Lysenko, Ukraine goalkeeper

We wanted to prolong our stay in the tournament, but it just wasn't to be. That said, we achieved the target we initially set ourselves, which was to make the second phase. For that reason, we're leaving here satisfied.

Day 13 (Oct 12) game Ukraine 4 Iran 5

Shamsaee sparks Iran comeback

Iran live to fight another day after coming from two goals down to edge a thrilling Group E encounter with Ukraine by the odd goal in nine.

The Asian champions' fate wil now be decided against Italy on Tuesday after a heart-stopping encounter that had everything one could want from a futsal match: excitement, passion and goals.

The respective sides' commitment to attack ensured that and it was Ukraine, so effective on the break, who looked to have the greatest cutting edge when they marched into a 2-0 lead inside nine minutes through goals from Ildar Makayev and Sergiy Cheporniuk.

Yest, with Iran looked tired and disorientated, their captain Vahid Shamsaee led by example, scoring from a penalty to reduce the deficit and forcing Fedir Pylypiv into an own goal to equalise before netting another spot kick to put Iran in front.

Mohammad Taheri took up the guantlet to score Iran's fourth and fifth goals, leaving Ukraine chasing a result that would preserve their own fragile hopes. As it was, while the Eastern Europeans poured men forward in search of a way back into the match, a combination of poor finishing, bad luck and superb goalkeeping from Mostafa Nazari ensured that the celebrations belonged to Iran.

Shams Hossein, Iran coach
It was a very even game, one which both teams needed to win, and fortunately we came out on top. We'll have an edge against Italy in Brasilia, because we know the venue and the crowd and they don't. But all we want to think about is reaching the final and hopefully meeting Brazil.

Vahid Shamsaee, Iran player.

I'm sad that I won't be able to play against Italy, but my squad-mates that can fill in for me are better than I am.

Gennadiy Lisenchuk, Ukraine coach

Aside from what the mathematical probabilities say, we already know that we won't be in the hunt for a podium finish. We'd like to thank all the Brazilians for their support and we've got no complaints at all about the hosting of the event.

Day 12 (Oct 11) game: Ukraine 0 Italy 4

Four-star Italy cruise

Italy put four past Ukraine in a one-sided encounter at the Maracanazinho on Saturday at the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008.

This meeting between two European sides saw a clash of similar styles. Both opted for man-to-man marking in the area, both displayed caution when handling the ball, but it was in attack when the differences game, with the Italians using more long-ball tactics.

Both goalkeepers were tested, but there were no real clear-cut chances created in a first-half that ended goalless. However, the second half was much improved and Patrick Nora put Italy ahead from a free kick within seven minutes of the restart.

Marco Forte doubled the Italian's advantage in the 32nd minute and soon after Ukraine's Roman Vakhula lost his head, was awarded a red card and the following play, Nora scored the third. Forte, from midfield, sealed the 4-0 resultin the closing seconds.

Alessandro Nuccorini, Italy coach
Today it was our defence and our well-honed dead-ball ability that won us the game. The final score doesn't reflect the play, and I'd like to praise the efforts of the Ukrainian players because it was a really even game. Against Brazil it will be even more difficult, but we must put in that extra bit of effort if we want to reach the semis.

Gennadiy Lisenchuk, Ukraine coach
I congratulate Italy on their win in a very keenly contested match that could have gone either way. We had to change our tactics after the first goal and they took advantage well. Against Iran it will be another tough match, but we're going to try and win to stay in the hunt.

Day 10 (Oct 9) game: Ukraine 4  China 2

Ukraine reign in Group C

Ukraine qualified for the second round of the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008 as group winners after a 4-1 defeat of China in Rio de Janeiro.

Although Ukraine dominated the match in the first half in terms of possession and chances, they had little to show for their efforts, having been frustrated time and time again by China's goalkeeper Zheng Tao who stopped everything aimed at his goal, including a superb save from Valeriy Legchanov's effort from the second penalty spot.

China, although outplayed, never gave up and had chances of their own which forced Yevgen Ivanyak into some fine saves. However, everyone in the Maracanazinho was still shocked in the 19th minute when after a quick break from Liu Xinyi, Hu Jie fired the Asians ahead.

The lead was shortlived when Ukraine equalised with just 13.6 seconds of the half remaining through Valeriy Zamyatin. Zamyatin was also on hand to score Ukraine's second in the 33rd minute.

After taking the lead, Ukraine produced their best football of the end and sealed the final result with goals from Ildar Makayev and Dmytro Silchenko. They now enter a group which contains Brazil, Iran and Italy in the next group phase.

Valeriy Zamyatin, Ukraine player
There are never any easy games at the World Cup, and China proved that today. Our next group is very tough and we need to be prepared, not just to take on Brazil and Italy but also Iran, who are a very strong side.

Hu Jie, China player

I'm delighted to have scored a goal in my first World Cup finals. I started playing futsal four years ago, and even though we haven't reached the second round, I hope we've helped contribute to the growth of the sport in my country.

Day 8 (Oct 7) game: Ukraine 5 Egype 1

Ukraine romp to top

Ukraine's 5-1 win over Egypt on Tuesday in Brasilia sees them rise to the top of Group C (tied with Argentina on seven points, but ahead on goals) at the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008.

The East Europeans got off to a hot start when Sameh Saleh put through his own goal on seven minutes. Valeriy Legchanov then doubled the score from the spot in the 18th minute to make it 2-0 at the interval.

Dmytro Ivanov increased the lead to 3-0 inside the first two minutes of the second period. Mizo then hit back for the Egyptians to make it 3-1 and give a glimmer of hope to the Africans. However, Sergiy Cheporniuk hit home a penalty kick in the 31st minute and Valeriy Zamyatin added a fifth with four minutes to go and settled the affair for the impressive Europeans who outshot their opponents 25-7.

The Ukrainians - tied with Argentina at the pinnacle of Group C - are a very good bet to move on to the next round, needing only to avoid defeat against winless China PR in their final game of the section on 9 October.

Day 6 (Oct 3) game: Argentina 2 Ukraine 2

Honours even in Brasilia

The statistics of the game between Argentina and Ukraine tells the story of a closely fought encounter at the Gimnasio Nilson Nelson. Whereas the South Americans had 12 shots on target and 51 per cent of the possession, the Europeans had 11 attempts and 49 per cent of the ball. It is perhaps unsurprising that the game ended all-square, and what a game it was.

Despite all of the goals coming in the second half, the first was an entertaining, even affair. Argentina had the first chance of the game in the fourth minute when Diego Giustozzi's volley went narrowly over. Marco Gimenez also went close, but Vladyslav Lysenko made a smart save.

As the half wore on Ukraine got more into the game and had two good opportunities when Valeriy Legachov fired wide and Oleksandr Khursov saw his close range attempt saved. Lysenko was called into action again twice as half-time approached, but held firm to ensure parity.

Dmytro Silchenko had a wonderful chance to put his side ahead after the restart, but Javier Guisande made a fantastic save. The deadlock was finally broken in the 32nd minute when Leandro Planas fired the ball into the net from close range. Five minutes later, Ukraine were level when a mistake from Argentina captain Carlos Sanchez was punished by Dmytro Ivanov.

Ukraine may have thought that they had won the game in the 39th minute when Sergiy Cheporniuk's lob beat Santiago Elias, but Argentina equalized with 15 seconds to go, Elias finding Giustozzi who made no mistake to give his team a share of the spoils.

Day 4 (Oct 3) game: Ukraine 6 Gutemala 2

Ukraine open in style

Ukraine entered the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008 fray in the best possible way on Friday in Brasilia, winning out 6-2 against an outmatched Guatemala.

Valeriy Zamyatan opened the scoring for the East European after 13 minutes even though the Central Americans were the ones asking most of the early questions. Eduardo de Leon managed an equaliser for the Guatemalans two minutes into the second half, but parity didn't last for long as Sergiy Cheporniuk hammered home two minutes later to make it 2-1 to Ukraine.

Two goals in three minutes (26' and 29') from Yevgen Rogachov sealed the deal for the Ukrainians who went on to win by a justifiable 6-2 scoreline after Mykhaylo Romanov and Valeriy Legchanov added late insurance and Erick Acevedo pulled back a bit of consolation for the Guatemalans .

The 1996 fourth-place finishers, Ukraine, now sit in second place in Group B, tied with Guatemala, but with a game in hand. Argentina top the section with six points from two wins.

Yevgen Rogachov, Ukraine player
Guatemala are a strong team so we knew what to expect. No matter who our opponents are, we’ll be giving our best in every game in order to reach the next round. We always play to win.

Estuardo de Leon, Guatemala player
We played well but went to sleep at crucial moments in the game and lost the match as a result.
